Our Favorite Things in North Myrtle Beach: A Locals’ Guide

Family-Friendly
Family-Friendly

Locals and visitors love North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for its family-friendly vibe, uncrowded beaches and the extraordinary variety of experiences. There’s so much to see and do here, you may have trouble choosing—especially when you only have a limited amount of time.

No worries, because we have the inside scoop! The Vantage team lives and works in the Grand Strand year-round, and we’re constantly getting feedback from guests about what they love best about North Myrtle Beach. So we’ve put together this guide to our favorite things and theirs. We’ll be happy to share even more when you book your vacation rental property.

Favorite adventures and activities

Kayaking Tour
Cruise around the sound in kayaks

North Myrtle Beach offers remarkable, up-close wildlife encounters for you and your family. You may even forget you’re in South Carolina. Start with Alligator Adventure—the reptile capital of the world—featuring alligators, bobcats, hyenas, lemurs and Utan, the largest crocodile on exhibit in the United States. Learn about these mysterious creatures during live educational shows and the can’t-miss gator feedings.

Continue your walk on the wild side at T.I.G.E.R.S. Preservation Station, another unique nature destination where visitors can watch large cats and cubs at play. Get your picture taken feeding a tiger cub or cuddling with a monkey and watch your Instagram feed blow up!

When you’re ready for some friendly competition, North Myrtle Beach’s miniature golf courses provide plenty of options for family fun. Mayday Golf, Paradise Adventures Golf and Professor Hacker’s Lost Treasure Golf courses include facts, stories and themes, complete with tropical islands, helicopters, train rides, mountains, Mayan pyramids and lost treasure as you putt your way to the finish.

For a cool day of water fun, cruise around the sound in kayaks and paddleboards from J&L Kayaks. Don’t feel like paddling? Try the jet skis and pontoons at Action Water Sportz. At New Wave Watersports, you can enjoy stunning views from above by parasail, or zoom past the beach on a banana boat. Splashing and laughter guaranteed.

golf
Enjoy world-class golf courses

Want to sneak away for some adult time on your beach vacation? North Myrtle Beach has over 20 world-class golf courses to choose from. Sample up to 10 wines from Duplin Winery—the oldest and largest wine tasting venue in the South. Try solving the crime during a murder mystery dinner at the famous House of Blues. The Alabama Theatre hosts resident variety shows and live performances from beloved artists, including the likes of Three Dog Night, Wynonna Judd and Josh Turner.

Favorite places to shop

Glass blower
So many shopping options!

Shopping is one of the most popular things to do in North Myrtle Beach for locals as well as visitors. The latest attraction here is Coastal Town Center—a brand-new venue with 21 stores offering clothes, jewelry, crafts sporting goods, food and much more.

Barefoot Landing is a perennial favorite of North Myrtle Beach residents. A relaxing sanctuary along the Intercostal Waterway featuring a 27-acre lake, this destination combines serene surroundings and a niche shopping experience. With 100 different national and local boutiques and restaurants, there’s enough to keep the whole family engaged for an entire day. And if the kids get antsy, Alligator Adventure and the T.I.G.E.R.S. Prevention Station are right next door.

A short drive from North Myrtle Beach, Tanger Outlets is discount city. Large factory outlet stores make up much of the shopping here, and we all know what that means—deals by the bagful. If that’s not enough, you’re just across the highway from more stores and a movie theater at Myrtle Beach Mall.

Favorite places to eat

Seafood Restaurant

No locals’ guide to North Myrtle Beach would be complete without focusing on the fantastic restaurant choices. We could write an entire book on this topic alone, but we’ll just give you a little nibble here. Fresh coastal cuisine and good vibes are always on the menu at Lulu’s, with live music and an outdoor play area. Filet’s on the Water pleases every palate with succulent steaks, sushi and seafood. Flying Fish Public Market and Grill serves up southern delicacies with a side of shrimp. For something on the cozier side, Joe’s Bar and Grill offers amazing cuisine matched only by the panoramic views of the saltwater marsh.

Beyond North Myrtle Beach

Hollywood Wax Museum
Hollywood Wax Museum

If you’re seeking a change of scenery, take the short drive south and explore some of our favorite things in the Myrtle Beach area. Broadway at the Beach is the total package—dining, shopping, live entertainment, special events and nightlife. You must take the crew to WonderWorks—dubbed an amusement park for the mind, with more than 100 hands-on exhibits. You’ll have no trouble finding the place, since it’s the only upside-down building in town. Ripley’s Aquarium is here, too, along with more mini-golf courses and the thrilling Beach Rider jet boat. Get your picture taken with your favorite celebrities (sort of) at the Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center. Fulfill your need for speed driving a NASCAR race car around the Myrtle Beach Speedway.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is another local treasure, with the gigantic SkyWheel, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum and the landmark 2nd Avenue Pier. Channel your inner Jack Sparrow and bring all your buccaneers to catch the swashbuckling excitement of the Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show.

Cigar Bars

For a more laid-back bar setting, plan a stop at Nick’s Cigar and Wine Bar. This North Myrtle Beach cigar bar is divided into three sections: the social bar with beer, wine, and high-top tables; the living room with leather-wrapped club chairs and board games; and the golf room with a state of the art indoor golf simulator.

Comedy Clubs

Leave your stress at the door and spend a night at what might be one of the best North Myrtle Beach attractions for adults. Laugh until you cry at a stand-up show at one of the many comedy clubs in the area.

Golf Courses

North Myrtle Beach is the place to go for some of the state’s best golf courses. With nearly 100 courses in the area, there is one for every budget and skill level. Take your pick and make plans to play nine holes or a full round (or two)!

Live Music at the House of Blues

While there are plenty of places along the Grand Strand to catch live music, the House of Blues at Barefoot Landing is the closest, and best, place to catch a concert. Before your trip to North Myrtle Beach, check their calendar of events and plan a night out at the House of Blues.

Watersports

If you’re looking to spend a lot of time on the water during your next beach vacation, consider renting a jet ski, kayak, or surfboard for a day. Because of the small waves and soft, sandy ocean floor, active travelers of all experience levels can try their hand at one of the many watersports available to them  in Myrtle Beach.

Wine Tastings

Who says you have to travel to California for a proper wine tasting? There are three exceptional wineries just minutes from the center of North Myrtle Beach. For a relaxing treat, make plans to spend a day in the tasting rooms at Carolina Vineyards Winery, Duplin Winery, or La Belle Amie Vineyard!
