Speaking of garden backdrops, beauty is always in bloom in Brookgreen’s Botanical Gardens—a natural masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world. Among the most impressive displays: the 250-year-old Live Oaks towering overhead on Live Oak Allée. The butterfly garden with four wings is a delight for all ages. Stroll through a series of more formal, masterfully designed gardens bursting with color and fragrance.

The Lowcountry Zoo allows you to get close to and learn about animals native to the Myrtle Beach area that are feeling the strain of rapid development. Alligators, bald eagles, river otters, red and grey foxes, and many species of waterfowl call the zoo home.

Be sure to take a tour of Atalaya—the historic winter home that once belonged to the park’s namesakes, Archer and Anna Huntington. (Anna created some of the sculptures on display at Brookgreen.) The sprawling one-story house, inspired by Moorish architecture from the Mediterranean coastline, boasts over 30 rooms, a large courtyard and its own water tower.

Huntington Beach State Park’s hiking trails cater to a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, with several spots to observe birds and other wildlife. For something a little different and definitely memorable, book a tour of the park by Segway PT Glide from Myrtle Beach Segway.

Myrtle Beach State Park: An escape from the crowds

Our Favorite Things in North Myrtle Beach: A Locals’ Guide

Family-Friendly
Family-Friendly

Locals and visitors love North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for its family-friendly vibe, uncrowded beaches and the extraordinary variety of experiences. There’s so much to see and do here, you may have trouble choosing—especially when you only have a limited amount of time.

No worries, because we have the inside scoop! The Vantage team lives and works in the Grand Strand year-round, and we’re constantly getting feedback from guests about what they love best about North Myrtle Beach. So we’ve put together this guide to our favorite things and theirs. We’ll be happy to share even more when you book your vacation rental property.

Favorite adventures and activities

Kayaking Tour
Cruise around the sound in kayaks

North Myrtle Beach offers remarkable, up-close wildlife encounters for you and your family. You may even forget you’re in South Carolina. Start with Alligator Adventure—the reptile capital of the world—featuring alligators, bobcats, hyenas, lemurs and Utan, the largest crocodile on exhibit in the United States. Learn about these mysterious creatures during live educational shows and the can’t-miss gator feedings.

Continue your walk on the wild side at T.I.G.E.R.S. Preservation Station, another unique nature destination where visitors can watch large cats and cubs at play. Get your picture taken feeding a tiger cub or cuddling with a monkey and watch your Instagram feed blow up!

When you’re ready for some friendly competition, North Myrtle Beach’s miniature golf courses provide plenty of options for family fun. Mayday Golf, Paradise Adventures Golf and Professor Hacker’s Lost Treasure Golf courses include facts, stories and themes, complete with tropical islands, helicopters, train rides, mountains, Mayan pyramids and lost treasure as you putt your way to the finish.

For a cool day of water fun, cruise around the sound in kayaks and paddleboards from J&L Kayaks. Don’t feel like paddling? Try the jet skis and pontoons at Action Water Sportz. At New Wave Watersports, you can enjoy stunning views from above by parasail, or zoom past the beach on a banana boat. Splashing and laughter guaranteed.

golf
Enjoy world-class golf courses

Want to sneak away for some adult time on your beach vacation? North Myrtle Beach has over 20 world-class golf courses to choose from. Sample up to 10 wines from Duplin Winery—the oldest and largest wine tasting venue in the South. Try solving the crime during a murder mystery dinner at the famous House of Blues. The Alabama Theatre hosts resident variety shows and live performances from beloved artists, including the likes of Three Dog Night, Wynonna Judd and Josh Turner.

Favorite places to shop

Glass blower
So many shopping options!

Shopping is one of the most popular things to do in North Myrtle Beach for locals as well as visitors. The latest attraction here is Coastal Town Center—a brand-new venue with 21 stores offering clothes, jewelry, crafts sporting goods, food and much more.

Barefoot Landing is a perennial favorite of North Myrtle Beach residents. A relaxing sanctuary along the Intercostal Waterway featuring a 27-acre lake, this destination combines serene surroundings and a niche shopping experience. With 100 different national and local boutiques and restaurants, there’s enough to keep the whole family engaged for an entire day. And if the kids get antsy, Alligator Adventure and the T.I.G.E.R.S. Prevention Station are right next door.

A short drive from North Myrtle Beach, Tanger Outlets is discount city. Large factory outlet stores make up much of the shopping here, and we all know what that means—deals by the bagful. If that’s not enough, you’re just across the highway from more stores and a movie theater at Myrtle Beach Mall.

Favorite places to eat

Seafood Restaurant

No locals’ guide to North Myrtle Beach would be complete without focusing on the fantastic restaurant choices. We could write an entire book on this topic alone, but we’ll just give you a little nibble here. Fresh coastal cuisine and good vibes are always on the menu at Lulu’s, with live music and an outdoor play area. Filet’s on the Water pleases every palate with succulent steaks, sushi and seafood. Flying Fish Public Market and Grill serves up southern delicacies with a side of shrimp. For something on the cozier side, Joe’s Bar and Grill offers amazing cuisine matched only by the panoramic views of the saltwater marsh.

Beyond North Myrtle Beach

Hollywood Wax Museum
Hollywood Wax Museum

If you’re seeking a change of scenery, take the short drive south and explore some of our favorite things in the Myrtle Beach area. Broadway at the Beach is the total package—dining, shopping, live entertainment, special events and nightlife. You must take the crew to WonderWorks—dubbed an amusement park for the mind, with more than 100 hands-on exhibits. You’ll have no trouble finding the place, since it’s the only upside-down building in town. Ripley’s Aquarium is here, too, along with more mini-golf courses and the thrilling Beach Rider jet boat. Get your picture taken with your favorite celebrities (sort of) at the Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center. Fulfill your need for speed driving a NASCAR race car around the Myrtle Beach Speedway.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is another local treasure, with the gigantic SkyWheel, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum and the landmark 2nd Avenue Pier. Channel your inner Jack Sparrow and bring all your buccaneers to catch the swashbuckling excitement of the Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show.

Submerge yourself in the refreshing waters of the Beach Club swimming pool, offering scenic views of the ocean and surrounding dunes. Three Lodge Villa outdoor pools provide peace and quiet amid the wooded areas of the resort, while the pool at the Tennis Villa invites complete lounging and relaxation.

Guests staying in the North and South Towers have their own private pools encircled by palm trees for a true tropical flavor. The South Tower pool flows inside beneath a domed area, where you’ll also find an indoor hot tub. From the North Tower pool deck, you can see the ocean as well as the natural creek for which the resort is named.

For fun without the sun, head for the cool, clear waters of the centrally located indoor pool at the Lodges. It’s right next to the indoor whirlpool, where bubbling, healing waters melt your tensions away.

Bigtime Family Fun

Ocean Creek Shuttle Service
Ocean Creek’s on-site shuttle service at the resort

It’s easy to understand why families flock to Ocean Creek every summer. This is the only oceanfront resort in Myrtle Beach stretching from Highway 17 to the ocean. The beach is wide and secluded, like having your own private getaway.

The property includes an abundance of boardwalks, nature trails and paths for walking, jogging and biking together. You’re likely to encounter herons, egrets, turtles and other wildlife along the pond or around the creek bridge.

During weekdays, the Ocean Creek Kids Club is in session. Designed for children ages 5 to 12, the Kids Club features different activities every day, including scavenger hunts, beach kickball, face painting, water balloon games, crafts, seashell searches, sand castle contests and much more. And kids of all ages love the oceanfront playground, complete with swings over the sand.

Good Sports

Tennis courts at Ocean Creek resort

If your vacation time means game on, Ocean Creek has you covered. Play a few friendly sets at Ocean Creek’s full-service tennis center. You can sign up for a round-robin tournament with other guests, or take a private lesson from the resident tennis pro. There’s also oceanfront beach volleyball—a favorite activity among families and groups of friends. The golfers in your group can work on shaving strokes off their short game by practicing on our on-site putting green.

Shopping, Dining, Entertainment

Barefoot Landing complex (photo by Forsaken Fotos)

When it’s time to explore, you don’t have to go far to find something special. With just a three-minute walk, you can be at Barefoot Landing —one of the most popular shopping, dining and entertainment destinations on the East Coast.

The whole family will love strolling the outdoor setting and checking out the huge variety of shops, which include eclectic gift boutiques, popular national retailers, beach-themed general stores, jewelry and lots more.

For dining and drinks, you’ll find choices at Barefoot Landing to please every palate. Try Lucy Buffett’s Lulu’s (yes, it’s Jimmy’s sister), the House of Blues with live music and fresh seafood from the Flying Fish Public Market and Grill. For dessert, satisfy your sweet tooth in one of several candy stores and ice cream shops.

If you feel like taking a walk on the wild side, do not miss Alligator Adventure—one of the largest facilities for reptile life in the world. Don’t let the name fool you: Alligator Adventure also houses exotic birds, monkeys, tortoises and hyenas, among other species. Then there’s T.I.G.E.R.S. Preservation Station, where you can get up close and personal with cubs, large cats and a monkey or two.

Delectable Dining

Ocean Creek’s on-site Beach Club Bar & Grill

Sure, you’re close to lots of wonderful restaurants. But you don’t have to leave Ocean Creek to satisfy your hunger.

Start each day at Ocean Creek’s Four Seasons Restaurant with a full southern breakfast buffet featuring fresh pancakes, waffles, eggs, sausage and bacon, homemade hash browns, hot coffee, juice—the works.

For lunch and dinner, head to the Beach Club Bar and Grill. Their specialty? Mouthwatering burgers, grilled chicken, tasty appetizers and frozen tropical drinks (with and without alcohol). The Beach Club hosts special fish fries, cookouts, taco nights and live music throughout the summer. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset at North Myrtle Beach.
