2. Alligator Adventure

There’s a good chance you’ll get to see a live alligator feeding!

For a unique—and educational—experience, visit Alligator Adventure, one of the most popular attractions in North Myrtle Beach. There’s a good reason they call this place the Reptile Capital of the World. Open seven days a week, Alligator Adventure gives you the exciting opportunity to see hundreds of animal species, including albino alligators, crocs, snakes, lizards, exotic birds, monkeys and hyenas. 

This 15-acre park in Barefoot Landing is home to some of the animal kingdom’s most vicious predators, like Utan—considered the largest crocodile on exhibit in the United States at just over 18 feet. There’s a good chance you’ll get to see a live alligator feeding, where massive gators leap from the water to snatch a meal. 3. Ripley’s Aquarium

Learn about jellyfish, the octopus and other colorful species.

Ripley’s Aquarium is not your average fish tank. Dive in—yes, in the water—to get up close and personal with sea creatures like sea turtles, giant stingrays and even sharks. For something a little less hands-on, try the Glass Bottom Boat Adventure, which puts you in the shark tank separated by a few inches of glass. 

Exhibits at Ripley’s Aquarium give kids a glimpse of the vibrant undersea life around the world, including the Rio Amazon and the Indo-Pacific coral reef. They’ll learn about jellyfish, the octopus and other colorful species that inhabit the ocean’s mysterious ecosystem.

4. Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show

The popular Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show invites your whole family to join Captain Blackbeard in his search for treasure. 6. Hollywood Wax Museum

Take the kids to the Hollywood Wax Museum to learn about and pose with their favorite superstars and snap pictures for the perfect souvenir. Prop stations have plenty of hats, microphones, tiaras and other swag to complete the shot. Say “cheese!” next to actors, athletes and style icons that look astoundingly real. 

While you’re there, get lost in Hannah’s Maze of Mirrors or capture zombies at Outbreak – Dread the Undead. If you’re looking for a fun and unique experience with kids, the Hollywood Wax Museum has it all. If you need help finding the museum, just look for the gigantic King Kong on the roof.

7. Barefoot Landing

There are tons of fun shops, candy stores, ice cream shops and over 20 restaurants and eateries.

Options abound for kids of all ages at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach. From June to September, SummerFest! offers nightly live entertainment—music, juggling, dance demonstrations, special guests, you name it. Come on a Monday and enjoy the dazzling fireworks display at 10 p.m.

Really, any time is a great time to bring the kids to Barefoot Landing. There are tons of fun shops, candy stores, ice cream shops and over 20 restaurants and eateries. 8. Broadway at the Beach

Fireworks displays paint the sky every Tuesday night during the summer months.

Broadway at the Beach has a little bit of everything all summer long. This is where you’ll find WonderWorks and Ripley’s Aquarium, but those are just two of the big attractions here. Other kid (and parent) favorites include the Backstage Mirror Maze, the Beach Rider Jet Boat, mini golf and the amusement rides at Pavilion Park. You can even zipline across the lake at Soar & Explore

Brookgreen Gardens: A retreat for the senses

Speaking of garden backdrops, beauty is always in bloom in Brookgreen’s Botanical Gardens—a natural masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world. Among the most impressive displays: the 250-year-old Live Oaks towering overhead on Live Oak Allée. The butterfly garden with four wings is a delight for all ages. Stroll through a series of more formal, masterfully designed gardens bursting with color and fragrance.

The Lowcountry Zoo allows you to get close to and learn about animals native to the Myrtle Beach area that are feeling the strain of rapid development. Alligators, bald eagles, river otters, red and grey foxes, and many species of waterfowl call the zoo home.

Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been named the in the top 10 Public Gardens by Coastal Living Magazine and top 10 South Carolina attractions by USA Today.

Huntington Beach State Park: A stroll back in time

Observe birds and other wildlife.

Just across the highway from Brookgreen Gardens you’ll find Huntington Beach State Park—2,500 acres of natural treasures offering a welcome break from the busier beaches on the Grand Strand.

Enjoy the sun and surf here with over three miles of beachfront, with convenient restrooms and shower facilities. Fishing is permitted along certain sections of the beach with a South Carolina salt water fishing license.

Be sure to take a tour of Atalaya—the historic winter home that once belonged to the park’s namesakes, Archer and Anna Huntington. (Anna created some of the sculptures on display at Brookgreen.) The sprawling one-story house, inspired by Moorish architecture from the Mediterranean coastline, boasts over 30 rooms, a large courtyard and its own water tower.

Huntington Beach State Park’s hiking trails cater to a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, with several spots to observe birds and other wildlife. For something a little different and definitely memorable, book a tour of the park by Segway PT Glide from Myrtle Beach Segway.

Myrtle Beach State Park: An escape from the crowds

No nature lover’s itinerary would be complete without a visit to Myrtle Beach State Park—nearly a mile of wide, uncrowded seashore, along with miles of hiking trails, a beachfront boardwalk, picnic facilities and a peaceful fishing pier.

The hiking trails offer a relatively easy and flat trek throughout the park. You’ll see large sections of undisturbed maritime forest. Interpretive signs along the way help you identify different tree species.

Try your luck on the fishing pier and you could take home dinner of king and Spanish mackerel, flounder, red drum, bluefish, sea trout and other game fish known to frequent the area. You pay a nominal fee to enter the pier, but no license is required.

Depending on when you drop by, you may be able to visit the park’s Nature Center for family-friendly educational programs and meet some friendly critters.

The Waccamaw River: An enchanting excursion
