Make Your Vacation Rental Stand Out: A Guide for Myrtle Beach Property Owners

Surprise and delight your guests.

There’s a lot of competition for vacation rental properties in Myrtle Beach, SC. How can you make yours stand out? As property management experts, Vantage knows. And we’re happy to share our pro tips with you. In our last article, we provided a basic guide to all the essentials and amenities that Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, visitors expect from your property. In this article, we’re going to take things up a notch. You can raise your ratings, your return bookings and your rental income by raising the bar. The key here is to exceed expectations. You’ll want to surprise and delight. In short, you’ll want to give them things they don’t expect to find in a Myrtle Beach, SC, vacation rental. Follow these tips to elevate your property to premium and enhance the guest experience.

Roll out the red carpet

Greet them with a beautifully arranged and stocked welcome basket.

First impressions matter. This starts at the front door. These days, guests either already have, or know about, all the cool high-tech keyless locks and doorbell cameras. But that doesn’t mean they’ll expect them at your rental! Invest in a keyless entry system and text or email your guests a passcode, along with the time their property will be ready. They’ll love not having to keep track of keys—and you’ll get the added bonus of an entry audit trail. Once guests enter your property, you have another opportunity to surprise and impress. Greet them with a beautifully arranged and stocked welcome basket. It can contain snacks, wine, coffee, postcards, beach towels…you name it. Be sure to hand-write a welcome note and affix it to the top of the basket. It’s a relatively small gesture that can go a very long way.

Amp up the ambiance

Nothing caps a romantic getaway like a soak in the hot tub.

Nothing caps a romantic getaway like a soak in the hot tub, surrounded by bubbles and jets. A hot tub is not only luxurious, it’s a much smaller investment than a swimming pool. The maintenance costs are lower, too. Stock extra towels. Toss in terrycloth robes and complimentary slippers, and you’ll have guests lining up to rent your property. A fireplace sets a similar mood. If your property has one that’s been sealed off, get a pro to un-seal it and make it operable again. Even an electric fireplace adds an elite aura—it’s especially decadent after, say, a chilly day at the beach.

Ramp up the rainy day fun

Add a billiard or ping-pong table.

The weather in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, can turn on a dime. For those rainy days—and for those guests who simply want to de-stress and unwind—there are lots of luxurious indoor amenities you can offer. As we’d mentioned in our earlier article, you’ll want to provide a wide variety of fast, reliable streaming entertainment. This means a quick connection and options like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. (It also means stable Wi-Fi and lots of chargers—think power strips with USB ports—for portable devices.) Install a nice stereo and leave some carefully curated music for listening. You can, and should, stock a diverse library of DVDs and books. Remember your audience: You’ll want family-friendly fare, as well as items geared specifically toward kids and adults. Want to do more? Dedicate a game room. Add a billiard or ping-pong table. Find a refurbished arcade game. Stock an enticing selection of board and party games; think Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit and Twister. And be sure to include coloring books—both for kids and adults—with lots of crayons and gel-tip pens.

Consider the quiet

Your guests will find luxury in quiet.

After a boisterous day at Ripley’s Aquarium or Family Kingdom, your guests will find luxury in quiet. So serve it up! Tend to all those window and door seals. Weather-stripping and caulk go a long way. Lubricate squeaky hinges and lock sets. Add soundproofing to the laundry room so your guests don’t have to hear the rumbling and tumbling. For nighttime quiet, you can provide sleep masks, a supply of ear plugs and white noise machines.

Lux up the kitchen and bath

Splurge on affordable small appliances, like a blender (smoothies and piña coladas!)

We mentioned a lot of great tips for the kitchen and bath of your Myrtle Beach, SC, vacation rental property in our last article. Here are a few ideas to create a more luxurious experience. Kitchen appliances are focal points. Invest in stainless steel. Splurge on affordable small appliances, like a blender (smoothies and piña coladas!), a good coffee maker and a slow cooker. A nice set of chef knives and a well-stocked spice rack can cap the offering. In the bathroom, take a cue from the five-star hotels. Provide soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion in elegant dispensers or in single-use containers. Luxury means “where you don’t expect it,” so wow your guests with add-ons like a curling iron and complimentary mouthwash. In the bedroom, premium pillow-top bedding, memory-foam mattresses and a variety of pillows will satisfy even the pickiest of guests—and boost your reviews and return bookings.

What Vacation Renters Want: A Guide for Myrtle Beach Property Owners

Guests want the comforts of home plus amenities that help them unwind.

As Myrtle Beach vacation rental owners vie for continuous bookings at the topmost rates, it’s crucial to consider what guests expect—and the extra touches they so appreciate.

While these specifics change throughout the years, one thing’s for sure: Guests want the comforts of home plus amenities that help them unwind and forget about their hectic lives outside of your vacation property.

As property management experts, Vantage keeps up with the trends that make your vacation rental guests happy, spread the word and return to your property year after year. We’ve created a vacation rental management guide with suggestions and amenities that will help your property stand out.

A spotless space

Guests want their beach vacation rentals to be clean.

We’re sure you already know that guests want their beach vacation rentals to be clean—but a reminder never hurts. Pro tip: Make your life easier and your guests even happier by hiring a professional cleaning service, or a property management company that uses one. Additionally, on your list of essential items should be standard cleaning supplies, such as disinfectants. Your guests will like having the ability to tidy up as they go.

Powerful connections

Lightning-fast internet is essential for many vacationers.

For better or worse, lightning-fast internet is essential for many vacationers. Sure, renters want a sparkling ocean, warm sand beneath their feet and all the delicious local restaurants a Myrtle Beach vacation has to offer. They’re also excited to read all the articles they’ve saved, ignite a little FOMO by sharing pictures on social media and settle in to binge the newest show their friends have been raving about.

How do you ensure that speedy Wi-Fi? Get your own wireless router with some muscle. Sharing with the rest of your building will likely slow things up and annoy your guests.

Indoor entertainment

One—or more—flat-screen high-definition TVs is a must for your beach vacation rental property.

When it comes to TVs, renters require at the very least the type of set-up they have in their daily lives. One—or more—flat-screen high-definition TVs is a must for your beach vacation rental property. So is a cable package that includes major network channels, as well as sports, news, movies, and lifestyle and kids’ shows.

Another staple of today’s TV experience is a streaming device. Investing in a smart TV or a Roku Streaming Stick is an easy way to offer guests just what they’re looking for. You could pay for a subscription to Amazon Prime Video or another of the many streaming choices for your renters to enjoy. If you want to score major points with families, add a video game console to the mix.

A vacation-quality sleep

A stellar mattress is key to making your renters feel calm.

An uninterrupted sleep is one of the best parts about vacation. No alarm to abide by. No work stress to dream about. A stellar mattress is key to making your renters feel calm. Of course, people have different mattress preferences, but investing in quality mattresses—think along the lines of memory foam—makes a big difference.

The same goes for linens, if you provide them. Make your Myrtle Beach vacation home really stand out by giving renters the softest sheets, fluffiest towels and a variety of pillows and snuggly blankets.

A kitchen like home—but better

To really impress your guests, consider investing in stainless steel appliances and granite countertops.

Renters have different ideas of how to eat on vacation. Some prefer to go out, while others find cooking a delicious meal the ultimate form of relaxation. This is where you come in, by equipping your kitchen with plenty of cooking utensils, pots and pans galore and an abundance of silverware, dishes, mugs, cups and specialty cocktail glasses.

They also appreciate you going the extra mile to make their rental kitchen feel like home by including a coffee maker and coffee, a tea kettle with tea options and a blender for, well, anything!

To really impress your guests, consider investing in stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, for that luxurious feeling. And don’t forget to de-clutter your cabinets on a regular basis so renters have room to keep their own food.

Drying options

An easy way to make your renters’ lives less hectic is to install sturdy towel bars and plentiful hooks in bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Beach vacations in Myrtle Beach, SC, mean water. There’s nothing worse than arriving home with dripping bathing suits and damp towels and no place to hang them out to dry. An easy way to make your renters’ lives less hectic is to install sturdy towel bars and plentiful hooks in bathrooms, laundry rooms or anywhere except the balcony. That should be exclusively reserved for relaxation purposes.

Outdoor bliss

Summertime is ice cold drinks, watching other vacationers stroll along the water’s edge!

Summertime is ice cold drinks, watching other vacationers stroll along the water’s edge and—if at all possible—grilling some steaks, burgers and fresh veggies. An outdoor area equipped for lounging, chatting and feasting is something renters count on when they’re staying at the beach.

Fun things to do, inside and out

Give your renters a vacation to remember by offering indoor and outdoor items they can use while staying at your property.

People about to go on vacation pack plenty, but they can’t think of everything, especially when packing last-minute. Give your renters a vacation to remember by offering indoor and outdoor items they can use while staying at your property.

Consider lending books they can take to the beach or curl up with on a rainy day, along with playing cards, board games and binoculars so they can catch a glimpse of dolphins or birds.

For fun outdoor experiences your renters will love, think about items like paddleboards, kayaks, fishing poles or crabbing necessities. If you have a few spare bikes, even better!

Recommendations—from you

Tell your renters about your top picks for restaurants, day trips, and family outings they’ll adore!

What do renters want, especially when visiting a new place? Recommendations from a local. One idea is to put a welcome letter in a central location. Tell your renters about your top picks for restaurants in the North Myrtle Beach area, your favorite day trips, family outings they’ll adore and the takeout restaurants they just can’t pass up.

Basic and luxury items

What would make you ecstatic? Simple luxuries you might not expect.

Put yourself in your renters’ shoes. What essentials would you expect to see? Toilet paper and paper towels, of course. Hand soap, maybe even dishwashing and laundry soap.

What would make you ecstatic? Simple luxuries you might not expect—bubble bath, face masks, cozy robes, lotions and even flowers upon arrival.

Leaving on-the-go snacks, fruit and bottled water means a great deal to your guests. Just make sure they know these are gifts and not leftovers from past renters. None of this has to cost a lot of money—simply being thoughtful goes a long way.

What’s one of the most appreciated items? A few extra phone chargers!

The promise of communication

Make sure they know who to contact.

Most guests have a few questions before they arrive at your home. Or something might come up while they’re staying at your property. Make sure they know who to contact, how to reach their point of contact and that you or your property manager will respond quickly.

Partnering with a property management company is a great idea if you live far from your rental home or if you simply don’t want to be bothered in the middle of the night. (We understand!) Make sure the company is available 24/7 and has a record of extraordinary service.

Boost the appeal of your vacation rental property

It’s the Vantage team’s goal to assist vacation rental owners in providing the very best for their guests.

There are more ways than we could possibly include in this guide to put your Myrtle Beach, SC, vacation home above the rest. Brookgreen Gardens: A retreat for the senses

The butterfly garden is a delight for all ages.

Spanning more than 9,000 meticulously curated acres, Brookgreen Gardens is accurately billed “a unique melding of art, nature and history.” You could spend days here and still not see it all. (The guided tours will help you cover the essentials.)

Brookgreen is home to the country’s largest collection of American figurative sculpture—more than 2,000 pieces by over 400 artists set against a lush garden backdrop. There are also three indoor galleries with smaller but no less impressive works.

Speaking of garden backdrops, beauty is always in bloom in Brookgreen’s Botanical Gardens—a natural masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world. Among the most impressive displays: the 250-year-old Live Oaks towering overhead on Live Oak Allée. The butterfly garden with four wings is a delight for all ages. Stroll through a series of more formal, masterfully designed gardens bursting with color and fragrance.

The Lowcountry Zoo allows you to get close to and learn about animals native to the Myrtle Beach area that are feeling the strain of rapid development. Alligators, bald eagles, river otters, red and grey foxes, and many species of waterfowl call the zoo home.

Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been named the in the top 10 Public Gardens by Coastal Living Magazine and top 10 South Carolina attractions by USA Today.

Huntington Beach State Park: A stroll back in time

Observe birds and other wildlife.

Just across the highway from Brookgreen Gardens you’ll find Huntington Beach State Park—2,500 acres of natural treasures offering a welcome break from the busier beaches on the Grand Strand.

Enjoy the sun and surf here with over three miles of beachfront, with convenient restrooms and shower facilities. Fishing is permitted along certain sections of the beach with a South Carolina salt water fishing license.

Be sure to take a tour of Atalaya—the historic winter home that once belonged to the park’s namesakes, Archer and Anna Huntington. (Anna created some of the sculptures on display at Brookgreen.) The sprawling one-story house, inspired by Moorish architecture from the Mediterranean coastline, boasts over 30 rooms, a large courtyard and its own water tower.

Huntington Beach State Park’s hiking trails cater to a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, with several spots to observe birds and other wildlife. For something a little different and definitely memorable, book a tour of the park by Segway PT Glide from Myrtle Beach Segway.

Myrtle Beach State Park: An escape from the crowds

Myrtle Beach State Park

No nature lover’s itinerary would be complete without a visit to Myrtle Beach State Park—nearly a mile of wide, uncrowded seashore, along with miles of hiking trails, a beachfront boardwalk, picnic facilities and a peaceful fishing pier.

The hiking trails offer a relatively easy and flat trek throughout the park. You’ll see large sections of undisturbed maritime forest. Interpretive signs along the way help you identify different tree species.

Try your luck on the fishing pier and you could take home dinner of king and Spanish mackerel, flounder, red drum, bluefish, sea trout and other game fish known to frequent the area. You pay a nominal fee to enter the pier, but no license is required.

Depending on when you drop by, you may be able to visit the park’s Nature Center for family-friendly educational programs and meet some friendly critters.

Top 4 Reasons to Celebrate July 4th at the Beach

Red, White & You | July 4th in Myrtle Beach, SC

What could be more all-American than spending July 4th at the beach in Myrtle Beach, SC? Recently named one of the Top 5 Summer Beach House Destinations in the U.S. by TripAdvisor, Myrtle Beach is known for its clean beach, family-friendly atmosphere, and multitude of activities and events. Read on to find out why you need to spend your holiday here:

  1. Freedom

Celebrate your freedom in the place that makes you feel free! There’s nothing like having the sun on your face and sand between your toes to help you appreciate the freedom we have here in the U.S.A. Enjoy a moment of solitude as you listen to the waves and remember those who have fought for our freedom and continue to defend it today.  At 1:00 p.m. on July 4th, beach-goers will get to witness some of our country’s best military pilots in action during “Salute from the Shore.”  F-16s from Shaw Air Force base and several vintage military will show off their courage, teamwork, and expertise as they zoom over the South Carolina coastline from Cherry Grove all the way to Hilton Head.

  2. Fireworks

Bring a chair or a blanket and you’ve got the best seat in the house for fireworks in Myrtle Beach, SC. Fireworks displays will be held at several locations around town on July 4th. Visitors staying in the downtown area will be dazzled all along the Boardwalk as fireworks light up the night in the area of the 2nd Avenue Pier at 10:00 p.m. In addition, the nearby entertainment complex Broadway at the Beach will host its own fireworks at 10:00 p.m.  If you’re staying in North Myrtle Beach, then Barefoot Landing is the place to be. This scenic shopping and dining area has plenty of grassy areas to view fireworks over the lake. Did you know Myrtle Beach has a minor league baseball team?  The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will also host their own Independence Day fireworks display following their game that starts at 7:05 p.m. and features an “All-American” Package for $17.76, which includes a ticket in the Budweiser Thirst Inning Deck, a 24 oz. Budweiser draft bee (or soda), a hot dog, Cracker Jacks, and a mini American flag.

  3. Festivities

The Myrtle Beach area keeps the party going all day long with fun entertainment and activities. Start the day at 8 a.m. at The Market Common by participating in the Independence Day 8K (and 5K/1 Mile), a family-friendly race around Valor Park with prizes for various age groups.  Since it’s the 4th of July and it just wouldn’t be the same without a parade, check out Pawleys Island’s Annual 4th of July Parade (10:00 a.m.) or the  “Red, White and Southern” Annual Boat Parade at the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk (4:00 p.m.) where you can enjoy creative float displays and festivities.  Starting at 2:00 p.m., Croissants Bistro and Bakery in Myrtle Beach will sponsor its annual Cupcake Eating Contest at Broadway at the Beach in Heroes Harbor.  This event features numerous family-friendly activities such as face painting, pony rides, and live music, as well as a contest (3:00 p.m.) to see who can devour the most iced cupcakes in five minutes!

  4. Food

What’s a birthday party without the food? On Saturday, July 2nd, La Belle Amie vineyards in Little River will be hosting an Independence Day Cookout from Noon-5:00 p.m. with wine tastings, barbecue, and live music (bring 2 canned/dry goods for area food bank and save $3 on admission).  But no matter what days you are visiting over the July 4th holiday, Myrtle Beach offers ten miles of restaurants, from fine dining to casual cuisine. For some fresh crabs, stop by Joe’s Crab Shack at Broadway at the Beach for a classic crab-picking experience or a bushel of crabs to eat at home.  If you’re looking for a fun and family-friendly island atmosphere, check out Ocean Front Bar & Grill in the downtown area of Myrtle Beach (9th Ave. and the Boardwalk) for delicious appetizers, entrees and drinks as well as gorgeous views of the ocean. Finally, for some of the freshest local seafood around, stop by Captain Dave’s Dockside Restaurant in Murrells Inlet which features a casual and contemporary atmosphere and beautiful views of the water from their dining room.
